Nordic Spirit is a celebration of my Norwegian heritage and a tribute to my great-grandfather, who left Norway just over a century ago to begin a new life in Canada.

The Norwegian Fjord horse at the heart of the painting represents that connection between past and present. I often wonder what it must have been like to leave a homeland of coastal farms, mountains and ocean and arrive on the vast, seemingly endless expanse of the Saskatchewan prairie.

The vibrant reds, oranges, blues and turquoise throughout the painting are inspired by the vivid colours found in Norwegian homes and landscapes. Decorative patterns and symbols weave subtly through the horse and background, adding a sense of history and tradition. Most visible on the horse's cheek is an ancient symbol representing courage—a fitting reminder of the courage it took to leave everything familiar behind and begin again in a new land.

The joyful colour and energetic patterns also reflect Norway's reputation as one of the world's happiest countries. For me, Nordic Spirit is ultimately about heritage, courage, and the enduring connection between where we come from and where we make our home.
